A Nepali citizen detained by Iranian authorities near the Strait of Hormuz has been released, Nepal’s foreign minister confirmed, with preparations in progress to bring him safely back home.
Detained While Transporting Fuel Near Strait of Hormuz
Amrit Jha, a 33-year-old ship captain from Udayapur, was working for a Dubai-based shipping company. He was detained by Iranian authorities while returning to Dubai after collecting fuel from Iran.
The incident took place near the strategically sensitive Strait of Hormuz, close to Bandar Abbas port. Iranian Revolutionary Guard forces reportedly took him into custody during the operation.
Family Informed Through Voice Message
Days after his detention, Jha managed to send a WhatsApp voice message to his family, informing them that he and two Indian nationals had been captured by Iranian security forces.
Following this, his family contacted Nepal’s consular authorities and requested immediate diplomatic intervention.
Diplomatic Efforts Led to His Release
The Nepalese government initiated diplomatic efforts through its embassies and consular offices, particularly via its mission in Qatar. Officials confirmed that continuous communication with Iranian authorities helped secure his release.
Regional Tensions Raised Concerns
The detention occurred amid rising tensions between Iran, the United States, and Israel in the Middle East region. The Strait of Hormuz remains a critical global oil route, often affected by geopolitical conflicts.
Efforts Underway to Bring Him Back to Nepal
Authorities have confirmed that Amrit Jha is now in contact with Nepalese officials. Preparations are ongoing to ensure his safe return to Nepal at the earliest possible time.
