One Arrested After Doctor Assault at Narayani Hospital

The death of a patient at Narayani Hospital has led to a criminal investigation after a doctor was assaulted during the ensuing unrest, drawing renewed attention to the safety of healthcare workers inside public hospitals. Authorities have arrested one person in connection with the attack, while investigations continue to identify others allegedly involved and determine their roles.

The Ministry of Health and Food Hygiene said the violence inside a hospital setting is unacceptable and undermines both the working environment for medical professionals and public confidence in healthcare services.

Health and Food Hygiene Minister Nisha Mehta moved quickly to coordinate with multiple state agencies after the incident. The ministry said she held discussions with the Home Minister, the Inspector General of Nepal Police, the Chief District Officer of Parsa, local security officials, Narayani Hospital management, and office-bearers of the Nepal Medical Association to establish the facts of the case and ensure those responsible are brought under the law.

Rather than treating the incident solely as a law enforcement matter, the ministry has also framed it as a challenge to maintaining uninterrupted and secure medical care. Officials say attacks on healthcare workers can directly affect the ability of hospitals to provide treatment without fear or disruption.

Ministry Team Sent to Birgunj

A ministry delegation has been dispatched to Birgunj to assess the situation on the ground and coordinate with local authorities.

The team is expected to hold discussions with:

• Narayani Hospital administration
• Security agencies
• Other concerned stakeholders

The ministry said the delegation will compile details of the incident and monitor developments before submitting its findings.

Government Orders Full Medical Support for Injured Doctor

Medical Officer Dr. Pramod Ram, who was injured in the assault, has been directed to receive all necessary treatment without delay. Minister Mehta instructed the concerned authorities to ensure there are no shortcomings in his medical care, and the ministry said the government has made the required arrangements for his treatment.

Investigation Continues

Police have not disclosed the identity of the person arrested.

Investigators are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the patient’s death, the sequence of events that led to the attack, the number of people involved, and the specific role played by each individual.

The ministry reiterated that healthcare professionals must be able to work in a secure environment and that patients should be able to seek treatment without fear or disruption. It said legal action will be pursued against anyone found responsible for the violence.
