After Release, KP Sharma Oli Claims No Evidence, Calls Detention Unlawful on Facebook

Former PM alleges unlawful 13-day detention as authorities fail to produce evidence in high-profile GEN-Z protest case

Kathmandu — K.P. Sharma Oli has accused the government of unlawful detention after his release in the GEN-Z protest case, saying authorities failed to present sufficient evidence. The development raises concerns over legal handling of politically sensitive cases.

Oli, chairman of CPN-UML and former prime minister, was released on bail after spending 13 days in custody. He claimed the charges against him could not be substantiated despite prolonged detention.

Oli alleges unlawful custody and political bias

In a Facebook statement following his release, Oli said he had been held “illegally” under what he described as a politically motivated case. “Despite being kept in custody for 13 days under biased and retaliatory charges, the authorities failed to produce evidence to proceed with the case,” he wrote.

He framed his release as proof that the case lacked legal grounds from the beginning.

Thanks supporters and judicial intervention

Oli thanked supporters, legal teams, and political figures who stood by him during the legal process. He also expressed respect towards the Supreme Court for issuing the order that enabled his release.

He acknowledged lawyers, rights advocates, and political leaders who spoke in favor of justice, along with media personnel who followed the case.

Police and hospital care acknowledged

While criticizing the government, Oli said he received humane treatment from the police during custody. He also expressed gratitude to the medical team at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital, where he is continuing treatment due to health issues.

He noted that his health condition would require him to remain in the hospital for a few more days.

Calls for support to injured protesters

Referring to protests demanding his release, Oli raised concern over individuals injured during demonstrations. He urged the government to take responsibility for their treatment. “If the state remains indifferent, the party will bear the medical expenses,” he said, wishing a speedy recovery to the injured.

Arrest linked to GEN-Z protest allegations

Oli was arrested on March 28 in connection with allegations related to the GEN-Z protest, including claims of excessive force and negligence leading to deaths. The case drew national attention, with opposition voices questioning both the grounds for his arrest and delays in filing formal charges.

Political implications likely to intensify

Oli’s release is expected to further intensify political tensions, with debates likely over the government’s handling of protest-related cases and use of legal provisions. The focus now shifts to whether authorities will pursue further investigation or face criticism over what Oli and his supporters describe as misuse of power.
