Kathmandu — Harka Sampang files cyber complaint over death threat, escalating concerns about online abuse targeting public figures in Nepal.
Harka Sampang, chair of the Shram Sanskriti Party, has lodged a formal complaint with Nepal’s Cyber Bureau, alleging that a woman identified as Sunita Khadka issued death threats against him through social media. The complaint was filed on Monday, according to officials.
In his submission, Sampang stated that the individual used TikTok to threaten his life and warn of setting his house on fire. He described the language used as highly abusive and inhumane, and called for immediate legal action. The complaint also includes details of the TikTok account allegedly used to issue the threats.
Sampang further claimed that the accused is a supporter of the Rastriya Swatantra Party, raising questions about political accountability. In a public post, he challenged authorities to act impartially, asking whether the government would take action even if the accused is linked to its supporters.
Police have acknowledged receiving the complaint. Superintendent of Police Dilip Giri from the Cyber Bureau confirmed that the case has been registered and is under review. Authorities are expected to examine digital evidence and determine whether the alleged threats violate cybercrime and criminal laws.
The incident highlights growing concerns over the misuse of social media platforms to target political figures in Nepal. Experts say such cases underline the need for stricter enforcement of cyber laws and better monitoring of online threats.
As the Harka Sampang cyber complaint moves forward, the case is likely to test how effectively authorities respond to online threats and ensure accountability in Nepal’s digital space.
