Balen Shah Appointed Nepal Prime Minister Under Article 76(1)

Balen Shah becomes Nepal’s Prime Minister under Article 76(1) after securing majority support in the House of Representatives.

Kathmandu — President Ram Chandra Paudel has appointed Balen Shah as Prime Minister of Nepal under Article 76(1) of the Constitution of Nepal 2015.

Shah, the parliamentary party leader of the Rastriya Swatantra Party, was appointed after his party secured a majority in the House of Representatives, meeting the constitutional requirement for forming a government.

This is the first time since the promulgation of the 2015 Constitution that a Prime Minister has been appointed under Article 76(1), making the development constitutionally significant.

Under this provision, the President appoints the leader of the majority party in the House of Representatives as Prime Minister. Shah is now expected to form the Council of Ministers and assume executive responsibilities in line with constitutional provisions.
