More than 1,800 drivers were penalized in Kathmandu Valley over the past 24 hours as traffic police intensified enforcement against road rule violations.
Authorities said the actions resulted in hundreds of thousands of rupees being collected in revenue, reflecting ongoing efforts to improve traffic discipline and road safety in the capital region.
The latest figures released by the Kathmandu Valley Traffic Police Office show a wide range of offences, including drunk driving, illegal ride-sharing operations, speeding, lane violations and the misuse of vehicle horns in restricted zones.
Traffic officials have continued monitoring major roads and urban areas as concerns over unsafe driving practices remain high.
Large Number of Drivers Booked in Single Day
Traffic police reported that 1,854 drivers faced action for violating traffic regulations within the last 24 hours across Kathmandu Valley. The operation covered different categories of offences, with authorities targeting both public and private vehicle users.
Officials said the enforcement campaign was part of routine traffic monitoring aimed at maintaining order on busy roads and reducing risky driving behaviour. The penalties collected during the period contributed more than 448,000 rupees to the state treasury.
The latest crackdown highlights the scale of traffic violations regularly recorded in the capital, where congestion and unsafe driving remain major challenges for commuters and authorities alike.
Drunk Driving and Speeding Among Major Violations
According to traffic police data, driving under the influence of alcohol remained one of the most common serious offences recorded during the operation. A total of 125 drivers were penalized for drunk driving.
Authorities also took action against 171 drivers accused of speeding. Excessive speed continues to be viewed as a major risk factor for road accidents, particularly on busy urban roads and highways connected to the valley.
Traffic signal violations were also widely reported. Police said 179 drivers were found ignoring traffic signals during the inspection period.
Officials have repeatedly urged motorists to follow traffic instructions and maintain safe driving practices to prevent accidents and improve overall road discipline.
Illegal Ride-Sharing Operations Under Watch
Traffic police also targeted unauthorized ride-sharing activities operating against existing traffic rules. During the latest operation, 166 drivers were penalized for engaging in ride-sharing practices considered against regulations.
Authorities have continued monitoring such operations as complaints and concerns over compliance with transport rules increase in urban areas. Officials did not provide additional details about the vehicles involved but confirmed that enforcement against unauthorized services remains ongoing.
The issue has become increasingly visible in Kathmandu Valley as more drivers use private vehicles for passenger transport activities outside approved systems.
Lane Discipline and Parking Violations Recorded
Several drivers were also penalized for failing to follow basic road discipline rules. Traffic police said 27 motorists were booked for violating lane discipline regulations.
Improper parking on sidewalks and pedestrian areas also remained a concern. Police reported action against 66 drivers for parking vehicles on footpaths and restricted public spaces.
Authorities said such violations often create difficulties for pedestrians and contribute to traffic congestion in already crowded urban roads.
Horn Misuse and One-Way Road Offences Continue
The latest enforcement drive also focused on drivers using horns in prohibited zones. Traffic police said 104 motorists were penalized for sounding horns in restricted areas.
Officials have long attempted to reduce unnecessary noise pollution in Kathmandu Valley by restricting horn use in certain areas, especially in densely populated locations.
In addition, 112 drivers were found operating vehicles on one-way roads in violation of traffic regulations. Police said such actions increase the risk of congestion and traffic disruption, particularly during peak travel hours.

Authorities did not provide a detailed breakdown of those additional offences but noted that routine inspections continue across multiple locations in the valley.
Traffic enforcement teams have remained active at intersections, major roads and crowded transport routes as part of broader efforts to improve compliance with road safety standards.
Traffic Enforcement Efforts Continue Across Kathmandu Valley
Kathmandu Valley traffic authorities say monitoring and enforcement operations will continue as officials attempt to improve road safety and reduce violations. Police have repeatedly urged drivers to follow traffic signs, obey lane rules and avoid dangerous driving behaviour.
The latest figures underline the continuing pressure on traffic management systems in the capital, where rapid urban movement and increasing vehicle numbers have made enforcement a daily challenge.
Officials have encouraged motorists to cooperate with traffic personnel and respect road regulations to help create safer travel conditions for everyone using the valley’s roads.
