Sudan Gurung–China Talks Reinforce One-China Policy, Push Security Coordination

Zhang Maoming meeting highlights border security, illegal stay concerns, and growing Nepal–China strategic cooperation

Nepal Home Minister Sudan Gurung has reinforced the country’s commitment to the One-China policy during high-level talks with Zhang Maoming, underscoring growing security and diplomatic coordination. The meeting signals stronger bilateral alignment amid concerns over border management and illegal activities.

The discussion, held at the Home Ministry in Nepal, focused on security cooperation, illegal residency issues, and infrastructure collaboration between Nepal and China.

Security cooperation and policy commitment emphasized

During the meeting, Ambassador Maoming congratulated Gurung on his role and extended best wishes for a successful tenure. In response, Gurung reiterated Nepal’s firm stance on the One-China policy, stating that no anti-China activities would be allowed on Nepali soil.

He also stressed the government’s continued commitment to safeguarding national sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity.

Concerns raised over illegal Chinese nationals

A key issue discussed was the presence of Chinese nationals residing illegally in Nepal without visa renewal. Gurung called for stronger coordination and facilitation from the Chinese side to streamline repatriation processes.

The move reflects growing administrative and security concerns over undocumented foreign nationals, particularly in urban and border areas.

Push for infrastructure and trade cooperation

The Nepali side also urged China to ensure timely completion of ongoing development projects backed by Chinese support. Gurung emphasized the need to accelerate progress on the proposed Nepal–China railway project, seen as a major connectivity milestone.

Additionally, he called for further efforts to ease bilateral trade, aiming to boost economic ties between the two countries.

Border crime and security collaboration discussed

Both sides discussed enhancing cooperation to control criminal activities in Nepal–China border regions. The Chinese delegation expressed a positive outlook and signaled readiness to support capacity building of Nepal’s security agencies.

Tatopani border concerns dismissed by China

The meeting also addressed recent reports of disruptions at the Tatopani border point in Sindhupalchok district. Ambassador Maoming dismissed claims of obstruction, stating that there were no issues on the Chinese side and labeling such reports as misleading.

Agreement to deepen long-term bilateral ties

Both sides concluded the meeting by reaffirming their commitment to strengthening historical ties and expanding future cooperation. The Home Ministry stated that discussions reflected a shared intention to elevate Nepal–China relations to new levels.
