Kathmandu — Supporters of the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist–Leninist) staged protests across the capital on Saturday following the arrest of party chairman K. P. Sharma Oli, triggering heightened tensions in several parts of Kathmandu.
Protesters affiliated with UML-linked mass organizations gathered in large numbers and launched coordinated demonstrations opposing the detention of their leader. The situation escalated in the Babarmahal area, where activists burned tires in front of the district court, disrupting traffic and prompting a strong security deployment.
Earlier, representatives from 23 UML-affiliated organizations had assembled at Maitighar Mandala before marching toward restricted zones. Police intervened to prevent them from advancing, leading to brief scuffles and pushing between officers and demonstrators. Authorities later dispersed parts of the crowd, although protesters regrouped and continued their march.
The procession moved from Maitighar toward New Baneshwor, with demonstrators chanting slogans against the government and demanding the immediate release of Oli. Upon reaching Babarmahal, protesters intensified their actions by blocking roads and setting tires on fire.
Security personnel have been deployed in large numbers across Babarmahal and surrounding areas, as authorities continue to monitor the situation amid concerns over further escalation.
