Kathmandu — Yubaraj Lama resignation has drawn attention after the former Film Development Board member formally quit the Communist Party of Nepal, ending 18 years in the Maoist movement.

Former member of the Nepal Film Development Board and former member-secretary of the National Sports Council, Yubaraj Lama, submitted his resignation to party chair Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’. He announced that he will no longer be affiliated with any political party and will continue as an independent citizen.

He left the party citing long-standing frustration over being kept without a role and missing opportunities due to internal factional politics. Lama had been involved in the Youth and Sports Department of the then Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist Centre).

Internal Dissatisfaction and Reasons

In his resignation letter, Lama acknowledged the Maoist movement under Prachanda’s leadership for achieving historic milestones, including advancing the rights of marginalized communities, establishing a republic, and promoting secularism. He described Prachanda as a dynamic strategist and expressed gratitude for past responsibilities.

Lama noted that opportunities during the tenure of former Communication Minister Krishna Bahadur Mahara and Sports Minister Hit Bahadur Tamang allowed him to contribute to national service. However, he pointed to the influence of a “kitchen cabinet,” factional divisions, and a culture of personal lobbying as key reasons behind his decision.

He said his refusal to engage in factional politics led to him being sidelined. Lama also expressed dissatisfaction that junior members were promoted to central positions, while newcomers were directly placed in top roles, leaving long-serving members like him without responsibilities.

He further stated that even in the party’s recent expanded organizational structure, he found no place for himself. Reflecting on his journey, Lama said he remains proud of his 18-year contribution, but emphasized that the Yubaraj Lama resignation marks his shift to participating in politics only as an independent voter.
