Veteran Nepali film actor Sunil Thapa has died after suffering a heart attack, the Artists’ Association confirmed on saturday. Mohan Niraula, president of the association, said Thapa passed away this morning at Norvic Hospital in Thapathali, where he was undergoing treatment following the cardiac arrest.

Thapa had been living in an apartment in Shankhamul and was active for several decades in both the Nepali and Indian film industries. He was widely known for redefining antagonist roles in Nepali cinema, earning recognition and respect comparable to that of leading actors.

Among his most notable portrayals was the character “Rate Kaila,” a role that became closely associated with his screen identity. His body of work is regarded as instrumental in demonstrating that negative characters could be portrayed with depth, intensity, and lasting impact.

According to family sources, his other family members currently reside in Mumbai, India. Thapa’s death marks a significant loss for the Nepali film industry, which has lost a seasoned actor whose contributions remain influential.
