Tensions between the United States and Iran have escalated following a series of security incidents in the Arabian Sea and nearby strategic waterways.
Drone Shot Down Near U.S. Aircraft Carrier
According to international media reports, an Iranian drone approached the U.S. Navy aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln, which was deployed in the Arabian Sea amid heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran. The drone was shot down by a U.S. F-35 fighter jet before it could pose a threat to the vessel.
The aircraft carrier, carrying a large number of fighter aircraft and troops, had been dispatched toward the region via the Indian Ocean about a week earlier as part of expanded U.S. military deployments.
A spokesperson for the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), Navy Captain Tim Hawkins, said the action was taken to ensure the safety of the aircraft carrier and the personnel on board. The U.S. military confirmed that no American service members were injured and that no military equipment was damaged in the incident.
Iran’s mission to the United Nations declined to comment. However, Iran’s Tasnim News Agency reported that contact had been lost with a drone in international waters, without disclosing the cause, according to Reuters.
Tanker Incident in Strait of Hormuz Raises Maritime Concerns
Several hours after the drone was shot down, another tense situation developed in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital maritime route linking the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman to the Arabian Sea.
The U.S. military said two boats and a drone belonging to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) attempted to surround and seize the oil tanker MV Stena Impero, which was sailing under the U.S. flag.
According to maritime risk management firm Vanguard, the Iranian boats ordered the tanker to shut down its engine and prepare for boarding. The tanker instead increased speed and continued its journey. The U.S. Navy destroyer USS McFaul later escorted the vessel out of the area, providing security.
The U.S. military said the situation de-escalated following the arrival of the U.S. warship and confirmed that the tanker is proceeding safely toward its destination.
The incidents occurred as diplomatic preparations were underway for renewed nuclear talks between the United States and Iran. U.S. President Donald Trump has warned that failure to reach a nuclear agreement would have serious consequences, while also stating that Iran is engaging seriously in negotiations.
Iranian senior security official Ali Larijani has said arrangements for dialogue are progressing. Analysts say the United States has expanded its military presence in the Middle East following violent crackdowns on anti-government protests in Iran last month, contributing to increased regional instability.
