The Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist–Leninist) has opened its general convention to elect party leadership for the next five years. The three-day gathering began on Saturday at Sallahghari in Bhaktapur, where leaders, cadres, and representatives from across the country assembled from early morning.
The convention has drawn wide attention both within the party and beyond, as it takes place at a time of shifting political dynamics and growing internal debate. With recent political developments and rising expectations from younger party members, the event is widely viewed as a turning point that will shape the UML’s future course.
Party chairman KP Sharma Oli and senior vice-chairman Ishwar Pokharel are currently seen as the central figures linked to the leadership contest. However, party leaders have emphasized that the outcome will ultimately depend on the decision of the representatives attending the convention.
Delegates Express Mixed Views on Party Leadership
Bagmati Province Committee member Ishwar Adhikari said the leadership selection process should remain calm and consensus-oriented. He noted that around 2,200 representatives from across the country are taking part in the decision-making process. Personally, Adhikari said that considering the current political situation, Oli remains the most suitable leader for the party.
Purushottam Acharya, a representative from Rapti Municipality in Chitwan, shared a similar view, saying that support for Oli remains strong among party members. According to him, Oli continues to be the leader most capable of connecting with and encouraging younger cadres.
From Gulmi, delegate Kedar Chandra Bhusal pointed to the rapid progress in development work during Oli’s leadership, saying the party is well-positioned to return to government. He added that the convention should reinforce continuity by carrying forward past achievements.
At the same time, not all delegates hold the same view. Some have argued that a leadership change could bring renewed momentum. Delegate Kedar Basnet said this convention feels different from previous ones due to growing political awareness and discussions around generational change. In his opinion, Pokharel leading the party could provide fresh balance and energy, while Oli could continue contributing in an advisory role.
Anju KC from Gorkha said Oli should continue leading the party for some more time, stressing that experienced leadership is necessary in the current challenging political climate.
Meanwhile, a delegate from Surkhet said that a unanimous leadership decision would send a positive message. However, he added that if the selection goes to an election, Oli appears to be the only realistic option at present.
Overall, the UML general convention is being seen as more than a routine leadership exercise. It is widely regarded as a crucial moment that will define the party’s political direction, strategy, and leadership culture in the years ahead.
