Donald Trump Proposes $1.5T Defense Budget Amid Iran War

Massive military spending plan comes with deep domestic cuts and rising war costs

US President Donald Trump has proposed a record defense budget, signaling a sharp rise in military spending as the Iran war continues to strain national resources.

Historic Military Expansion Plan

The proposed budget for the upcoming fiscal year stands at $1.5 trillion, which, if approved, would become the largest defense allocation in US history. The plan reflects a major shift in spending priorities, with a significant increase in defense funding alongside deep cuts to non-defense sectors.

Key reductions include funding for health research, education, renewable energy, climate programs, and community development initiatives, totaling around $73 billion. The Trump defense budget proposal also outlines a 44 percent increase in military spending by 2027.

It includes an additional $350 billion aimed at weapons procurement and strengthening the defense industrial base. The administration argues that this investment is essential to maintain the United States’ global military dominance, enhance readiness, and modernize capabilities.

Plans include the development of the “Golden Dome” missile defense system, a 7 percent pay raise for troops, expanded shipbuilding programs, and increased focus on artificial intelligence in military operations.

Spending Cuts and Domestic Priorities

At the same time, the proposal boosts funding for the Justice Department by 13 percent, targeting immigration enforcement, gang activity, and drug-related crimes. However, several major departments face steep cuts, including environmental protection, foreign aid, labor, and agriculture.

Proposed reductions also target previously allocated funds for renewable energy projects and national health research programs. These sweeping cuts indicate a clear shift toward prioritizing defense over domestic and social spending, raising concerns about the long-term impact on public services.

Rising War Costs and Political Challenges

The Trump defense budget proposal comes as the United States faces rising costs from its ongoing conflict with Iran. Early estimates suggest that billions of dollars were spent within the first week of the war, with high-cost weapons used in initial strikes.

Policy analysts estimate that direct war expenses had already reached tens of billions of dollars within weeks, with daily costs remaining significant despite a gradual decline after the initial phase.

Political opposition is expected to intensify as the proposal moves through Congress. While Republicans hold a narrow majority in the House, the Senate could present challenges. Critics argue that rising military and war spending may place long-term pressure on the US economy.

As debate continues, the Trump defense budget proposal raises broader questions about balancing military expansion with economic sustainability in an uncertain global environment.
