CPN-UML Vice-Chair Surendra Pandey has expressed firm opposition to discussions within the party about increasing the number of office bearers. He said the proposal is unnecessary and inappropriate, especially after the party formally reduced its leadership structure earlier this year.
Some leaders seeking key positions have reportedly encouraged Chairman KP Sharma Oli to amend the party statute and expand the number of office bearers. However, Pandey urged members to respect the decision endorsed by the statute convention in Bhadra, which lowered the number from 19 to 15.
Speaking to journalists in Bagbazar, Pandey said: “The statute convention finalized the number of office bearers at 15 after extensive discussions. Now we hear talk of increasing it back to 19, which is not appropriate. If such a move is taken, we will oppose it.”
Pandey warned that expanding the leadership structure again could signal that personal ambitions are being prioritized over organizational discipline and stability.
Call to Restore Two-Term Limit for Party Chair
Pandey also highlighted the need to restore the provision limiting any individual to two terms as party chair. He argued that if the party plans to revisit the leadership structure, the two-term cap for the top position should also be reinstated.
The UML previously had a rule restricting an individual to two terms as chair, but that provision was removed under Chairman Oli’s leadership.
Leadership Race Intensifies Ahead of 11th General Convention
Ahead of the party’s 11th General Convention, scheduled to begin on Mangsir 27, internal leadership dynamics are intensifying. Chairman Oli is preparing to seek a third term, while Senior Vice-Chair Ishwar Pokharel is also expected to enter the race for party chair, according to party insiders.
Debates over statute amendments, leadership limits, and the structure of office bearers have heightened political activity within the UML ahead of the convention.
