Surendra Pandey Calls for Structural Reset in CPN-UML After Election Defeat

CPN-UML leader Surendra Pandey has called for a comprehensive reset of the party’s organizational structure and working style following the recent House of Representatives election results, saying the verdict delivered by voters must be taken seriously.

Kathmandu — CPN-UML leader Surendra Pandey has called for a comprehensive reset of the party’s organizational structure and working style following the recent House of Representatives election results.

In a statement shared on social media, Pandey said the election outcome has sent a clear message from voters and should be taken seriously by the party leadership. He said dismissing the result or attributing it solely to external factors would not be appropriate.

Election Verdict Should Be Respected

Pandey said concluding that the party was “trapped” or the victim of a conspiracy amounts to avoiding honest self-assessment. According to him, the party must respect the public verdict delivered through the ballot and review its leadership approach and operational methods.

He also questioned whether it would be wise to threaten disciplinary action against party members who speak openly about the situation. Pandey said when voters have already delivered a strong rejection through the ballot box, suppressing internal criticism would not be a constructive response.

Large Vote Margin Reflects Public Dissatisfaction

Pandey said the large vote margin seen in the election cannot be explained only as a result of internal sabotage. While internal factors may influence results to some extent, he noted that differences of five to ten thousand votes could be attributed to internal disputes, but a margin of forty to fifty thousand votes indicates a broader shift in public opinion.

He said the election outcome should be viewed as a signal that voters have rejected the party’s current style of operation and leadership approach.

Pandey warned that failing to introduce necessary reforms could create greater challenges for the party in the future. He stressed the importance of honest internal review, organizational reform, and changes in the party’s working style.

Following the recent House of Representatives election, in which CPN-UML faced defeat, discussions and internal debates have intensified within the party as leaders share their views on the causes of the electoral setback and possible future strategies.
