Six district presidents of the Nepali Congress from Sudurpaschim Province have issued a joint statement opposing the proposed special general convention.
The statement was released on Thursday by Khadak Bahadur Bohara of Bajhang, Narendra Bahadur Singh of Doti, Bhim Saud of Dadeldhura, Pushpa Bahadur Shah of Achham, Padam Bogati of Kanchanpur, and Narayan Datt Bhatt of Kailali.
Earlier, after 54 percent of party general convention representatives submitted signatures demanding a special general convention, the party’s Executive Committee decided that the justification for such a convention had ended and resolved to hold a regular general convention in Baisakh.
Despite this decision, party general secretaries Gagan Thapa and Bishwa Prakash Sharma later announced a special general convention scheduled for Poush 27 and 28.
Leaders Call the Convention Bid Unconstitutional, Urge Unity for Elections
The six district presidents from Sudurpaschim have termed the call for a special general convention as contrary to the party statute and urged party members not to participate.
“The party statute clearly states that the authority to convene any level of convention or special convention does not lie with any individual office-bearer or member, but solely with the Central Working Committee,” the statement said.
It further appealed to party officials and members at all levels, general committee members, general convention representatives, sister and affiliated organizations, well-wishers, and office-bearers and members of Nepali People’s Contact Committees abroad not to engage in any activities conducted in the name of a convention or special general convention convened in violation of the party statute.
The district presidents also called on party members to remain united and focus collectively on the upcoming House of Representatives election scheduled for Falgun 21 and the National Assembly election set for Magh 11.
Following the announcement of the special general convention by the general secretaries, district committees in Kathmandu and several other districts have issued separate statements urging representatives to participate in the proposed gathering.
