Kathmandu — Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba has said that he will not allow the party to split. Speaking with central members of the Nepal Student Union at his residence on Thursday, President Deuba expressed his commitment to keeping the party united.
During the meeting, the Nepal Student Union central members urged President Deuba to play an active role in safeguarding party unity.
Internal Differences Over Special General Convention
The Nepali Congress is currently facing internal differences over the issue of a special general convention. There has been growing discussion that these differences could potentially lead to a party split.
Nepal Student Union central members including Dharam Raj Shahi, Jagat Jung Bista, Binod Shahi, Ashish Devkota, Baburam Bhattarai, Navin Raj Joshi, Sandesh Tamang, and Raju Pangeny, among others, met President Deuba.
Nepal Student Union leader Ashish Devkota informed that during the discussion, President Deuba assured them that he would play a role in keeping the party unified.
“Recalling the painful experiences the party had to endure in the past due to internal disputes and conflicts, we emphasized the need to remain alert in time,” he said. “The growing misunderstandings within the party pose a threat to organizational unity. The party president must take the initiative to keep the party united.”
Deuba Assures Unity Through Dialogue
In response, President Deuba said that the party would not split and would remain united. “To face the current political challenges, the Nepali Congress must move forward as a unified force through dialogue, cooperation, and reconciliation,” Devkota quoted President Deuba as saying.
President Deuba also said that he would not allow divisions within the party and that he would engage in discussions with all sides to resolve differences. Meanwhile, despite opposition from a majority of leaders aligned with the establishment faction, the Nepali Congress special general convention is scheduled to be held on Poush 27 and 28.
The special general convention was called by General Secretaries Gagan Thapa and Bishwa Prakash Sharma, citing the need to implement the party statute following a demand made by 54 percent of the general convention representatives.
