Shekhar Koirala Urges Schools to Strengthen Public Education and Social Progress in Nepal

Nepali Congress leader Shekhar Koirala has said schools should also play a role in improving Nepal’s political and social condition, urging the government to prioritize community schools as a foundation for national progress.

Kathmandu — Nepali Congress leader Shekhar Koirala has said schools should take responsibility not only for education but also for improving the country’s political and social condition. Speaking at the 20th anniversary of Gyanjyoti Women’s Secondary School on Friday, Koirala stressed that strengthening public schools must be treated as a national priority.

“Democracy depends on education. An educated society builds a civilized nation. If a woman in the family is educated, the entire household is educated,” Koirala said. He added that lawmakers, government officials, and even the media have failed to give education the attention it deserves.

Schools as a Force for Social Change

Koirala noted that Nepal is facing both political and social decline, and schools can play a role in reversing the trend. He said teachers, administrators, politicians, and civil servants all share responsibility for creating the positive thinking needed to move the country forward.

“If schools, policymakers, and citizens commit to constructive action, the vision of a better Nepal can be achieved,” he said. Koirala also called on the government to prioritize community schools, saying the quality of education directly shapes how Nepal is seen in the world.

“Education is what allows a nation to be recognized globally. That is why strengthening the education sector must be the state’s first priority,” he concluded.
