CPN-UML General Secretary Shankar Pokhrel has said that the United States’ military intervention in Venezuela has undermined the legitimacy of global institutions, including the United Nations.
In a statement posted on Facebook on Sunday, Pokhrel said that detaining and prosecuting a democratically elected head of state through military intervention—carried out on the orders of another country’s leader—constitutes a direct violation of the UN Charter.
“Detaining and charging the popularly elected leader of a sovereign country through military intervention, on the instructions of another country’s head of state, is a blatant violation of the United Nations Charter,” Pokhrel said. “Such actions effectively render international institutions meaningless and cannot be accepted in the modern world or any civilized society.”
Referring to the US intervention in Venezuela and the detention of President Nicolás Maduro, Pokhrel said the incident has raised serious questions about international law, national sovereignty, and democratic values.
He added that developments of this nature require serious and responsible debate, including within the United States itself.
