Rupandehi, Nepal — The Nagarik Unmukti Party has faced a major organizational setback in Rupandehi district after the district president and a majority of committee officials and members resigned from the party.
Senior district vice president Rakesh Koiry said that 33 leaders, including Rupandehi district president Tulsi Tharu, have submitted a collective resignation and are preparing to join the Rastriya Swatantra Party. “The district committee has 51 members, and we are making efforts to bring as many of them as possible,” Koiry said.
He said the resignations were prompted by disagreements over decisions made by the party leadership, its working style, and the process of organizational management. Koiry stated that the group left the party without holding consultations with party chair Ranjita Shrestha or leader Resham Chaudhary.
“We are leaving for Kathmandu this evening. There is a program of the Rastriya Swatantra Party scheduled for tomorrow in Kathmandu, and we will formally join the party at that event,” he said.
Koiry added that similar departures from the Nagarik Unmukti Party are taking place in other districts of Lumbini Province. He said efforts are underway to weaken the party’s presence across the province.
Those who resigned include district president Tulsi Tharu, senior district vice president Rakesh Koiry, central committee member Mahesh Giri, Taradevi Chaudhary, Manju Dagoriya, Keshav Chaudhary, provincial committee member Madhav Chaudhary, district treasurer Ram Bahadur Tharu, women’s district president Radha Chaudhary, among others.
The mass resignation represents a significant political development in Lumbini Province and reflects growing internal challenges within the Nagarik Unmukti Party, while potentially strengthening the organizational base of the Rastriya Swatantra Party.
