Nepali Congress spokesperson Prakash Sharan Mahat has said that holding a special general convention is neither legally nor practically appropriate. Speaking to journalists at the party’s central office on Saturday, Mahat said discussions on a special convention are irrelevant as the party has already decided to hold a regular general convention.
He said the party had approved a revised schedule after it became clear that the regular convention could not be held within the initially planned timeframe, stressing that the decision must be accepted and implemented by all party members.
“The party has already taken a decision to hold a regular convention. Since it was not possible to complete it within the original schedule, a revised timetable has been endorsed. That decision must be respected by everyone,” Mahat said.
“Party office-bearers, in particular, should be focused on implementing the decision. In this situation, holding a special convention is neither legally nor practically appropriate, and participation in such a convention should not take place.”
Emphasizing the need to prioritize the upcoming general elections, Mahat said discussions related to a special general convention should be halted immediately. “This is the time to move toward the general elections with clear agendas. The party should function in line with the sentiments of its grassroots members,” he said.
“This is not a time for division. We must remain united, mobilize our full strength, and focus entirely on the general elections. Policy proposals should be endorsed through the Central Committee.”
