Kathmandu — CPN-UML Chairperson KP Sharma Oli has made it clear that the ongoing Statute Convention will not discuss the party membership of former President Bidya Devi Bhandari.
Opening the convention in Godavari on Friday, Oli said the gathering will remain focused only on statute-related proposals and discussions. “This platform will deal solely with organizational and statute matters. Other questions will be handled by the respective committees,” he noted.
Oli also addressed internal disputes, saying such issues should be taken up by the Secretariat, Standing Committee, Politburo, or Central Committee. He added that while they could be raised during group discussions, they would not become part of the official agenda.
On Thursday, the UML Secretariat had already decided not to put Bhandari’s membership on the table. Deputy General Secretary Pradeep Gyawali explained that even though Standing Committee member Karna Thapa had a different view, the Central Committee’s earlier decision would stand.
“The convention will deliberate only on matters directly tied to the statute. Other subjects will be resolved by the relevant bodies later. The Central Committee has already settled the question of former President Bhandari’s membership,” Gyawali said.
The UML leadership’s latest position shows that the convention will stay centered on internal reforms and organizational restructuring, leaving no room for renewed debate over Bhandari’s membership.
