Nepali Congress co–General Secretary Farmullah Mansur has accused sections within the party of deliberately creating fear of a party split to prevent Gagan Thapa from emerging as a key leader.
Speaking to journalists at the party’s central office in Sanepa ahead of a meeting of the Executive Committee, Mansur said that individuals who have consolidated control within the party are spreading rumors that a special general convention would lead to division.
“Can the Nepali Congress become strong when it is led by people who cannot function effectively, cannot move forward, and cannot even communicate properly?” Mansur said. “To block the leadership of Gagan Thapa—who is dynamic, thoughtful, organizationally skilled, capable of understanding issues, and able to clearly explain them to others—there is a deliberate attempt to keep the party stagnant by creating fear of a split. It is our responsibility to confront and defeat this conspiracy.”
Mansur stressed that the demand for a special general convention is not intended to divide the party but to make it stronger and more dynamic. However, he alleged that those who have captured the party structure for personal interests are deliberately preventing the convention from taking place in order to remain self-appointed leaders.
“There are conspirators who do not care whether the party wins ten seats or five in an election, as long as the party remains under their control,” he said. “Because of the actions of such anti-change forces, the call for a special general convention has emerged—to adopt new policies and elect new leadership. This is why reform-oriented forces within the Nepali Congress, led by Gagan Thapa and Bishwa Prakash Sharma, have pushed for a special general convention.”
