Nepali Congress Begins Special General Convention in Kathmandu Amid Internal Divisions

The Nepali Congress has launched its special general convention in Kathmandu amid internal divisions, with organizers claiming increasing support from party delegates nationwide.

Kathmandu — The Nepali Congress is set to begin its special general convention on Sunday at Bhrikutimandap, amid opposition from party President Sher Bahadur Deuba and most leaders from the establishment faction.

The convention is being held at the call of party General Secretaries Gagan Thapa and Bishwa Prakash Sharma, with the backing of 54 percent of general convention representatives. The special general convention will continue through Sunday and Monday.

According to the program schedule, rallies originating from various areas will converge at Bhrikutimandap, after which the convention will be formally inaugurated at 1:00 pm on Sunday. Although the convention organizers have invited President Deuba to attend the opening ceremony as the chief guest, his participation is considered unlikely.

Organizers Claim Growing Support Among Convention Representatives

General convention representatives from across the country have already arrived in Kathmandu. The Special General Convention Organizing Committee has claimed that support for the convention has continued to grow.

Speaking at a press conference held at Bhrikutimandap on Saturday, organizers said that around 60 percent of general convention representatives are now in favor of holding the special general convention.

According to the organizers, when the demand for a special general convention was formally raised on Ashoj 29, it was supported by 54.58 percent of representatives. They said the number has been increasing since then.

Addressing the press conference, Central Committee member Ajay Babu Shivakoti said that the process of representatives signing in support of the special convention remains ongoing, with more members publicly declaring their position.

Former Vice President Gopal Man Shrestha, who had long been close to President Deuba, has also publicly expressed his support for the special general convention.

Shivakoti added that additional general convention representatives from districts including Tanahun, Jhapa, Dhanusha, Rupandehi, Manang, and others have come out in support of the convention.
