Kathmandu — Nepal’s main opposition party, the Nepali Congress, is set to hold a crucial internal discussion over party president Gagan Thapa’s resignation following its recent election defeat. Vice President Bishwaprakash Sharma has said a proposal to reject Thapa’s resignation will be presented at the upcoming Central Working Committee meeting.
The committee is scheduled to meet at 1:00 p.m. on Friday at the party’s central office in Sanepa. The meeting will deliberate on the resignation submitted by Thapa and conduct a review of the party’s election performance.
Resignation After Election Defeat
Thapa resigned on Wednesday, submitting his letter to Sharma and taking moral responsibility for the party’s defeat in the House of Representatives election held on Falgun 21.
Ahead of the meeting, Sharma said on social media platform X that leadership must act responsibly during this period. He stated that while taking moral responsibility is positive, the immediate priority is to manage the current situation.
Proposal to Reject Resignation
Sharma said the meeting will include an initial review of the election results, discussion of the resignation letter, and presentation of a proposal to reject the resignation. He also indicated that it would not be fair to blame a leader working to handle the situation.
In the recent election, the Nepali Congress won a total of 38 seats under both the first-past-the-post and proportional representation systems. The meeting is being seen as important for determining the party’s next steps, including leadership and strategy.
