Kathmandu — Krishna Baniya (Sabuj), chairperson of the Kathmandu District Working Committee of the Nepali Congress, has issued a welcome message to general convention delegates arriving in the capital to attend the party’s special general convention.
Special General Convention Scheduled in Kathmandu
In the statement released on Thursday, Baniya also extended his best wishes for the successful conduct of the special convention. Referring to Article 17(2) of the party statute, he noted that the convention is being convened in response to a formal demand made by 54.58 percent of the party’s general convention representatives.
According to the statement, the second historic special general convention of the Nepali Congress is scheduled to be held on Poush 27 and 28 at Bhrikutimandap in Kathmandu. Baniya welcomed all general convention delegates to the capital and expressed his hope that the gathering would conclude with historic decisions and achieve grand success.
Call for Party Transformation and Leadership Role
In his message, Baniya stated that the Nepali Congress has consistently played a leading role in safeguarding democracy during various challenging periods in the country’s history. He emphasized that, following the Gen Z movement, the party must once again assume a leadership role to address the constitutional vacuum that has emerged and to protect democratic values.
“At a time when the leadership role of the Nepali Congress is indispensable, it is extremely necessary for the party itself to transform in order to ensure ideological clarity, organizational unity, effective management of internal democracy, and to confront the country’s contemporary political challenges,” the statement said.
Earlier, several district chairpersons of the Nepali Congress—including Lalitpur chairperson Jitendra Kumar Shrestha, Kaski chairperson Kishor Dutta Baral, Sindhupalchok chairperson Jang Bahadur Lama, and Udayapur chairperson Himal Karki—had also issued statements welcoming the special general convention and appealing for active participation.
