Nepali Congress to Hold General Convention Before Provincial and Local Elections: Gagan Thapa

Nepali Congress President Gagan Thapa has said the party will complete its regular general convention before the upcoming provincial and local elections, introducing a grassroots-based primary system for selecting election candidates.

Kathmandu, Nepal — Nepali Congress President Gagan Thapa has said that the party will complete its regular general convention before the upcoming provincial and local elections.

Thapa made the remarks on Saturday while interacting with party workers from Kathmandu Constituency No. 4. He said the party is moving toward concluding its internal convention process ahead of the elections.

He stated that the upcoming general convention of the Nepali Congress would bring a fundamental change to the party’s ticket distribution system. According to him, election candidates will be selected through a primary process starting from the grassroots level.

Thapa said ward-level party members will play a decisive role in selecting candidates, ending the long-standing practice of seeking tickets through senior party leaders. He added that party members would no longer need to visit the homes of the party president or general secretary to secure provincial election tickets.

Dismissing claims of factionalism within the party, Thapa said the previous practice of 60/40 power-sharing arrangements has ended. He further said the Nepali Congress has decided not to engage in power-sharing, either within the party or externally. According to him, the party will operate on the principle of equal treatment for all members.

Thapa said an internal campaign aimed at strengthening both citizens and the party organization has already begun. He described the changes as part of a broader transformation within the party.

“This is a changing Congress,” Thapa said. “The party’s general convention will be completed before the next local and provincial elections. Election tickets will be decided through a primary system by grassroots party members. There will be no closed-door dealings in the party president’s room.”

He said the Nepali Congress is moving forward with a commitment to reform and that a transformed Congress has come forward with a resolve to help transform Nepal.
