Nepal Speaker Election Set for April 5

All-party deal sets fast-track timeline as RSP prepares DP Aryal for Speaker role

Nepal’s House of Representatives is set to elect its new Speaker by April 5, following an all-party agreement to fast-track the process from the very first parliamentary sitting.

All-Party Agreement and Election Schedule

A meeting of major political parties held on Wednesday agreed to assign the Parliament Secretariat the responsibility of publishing the election schedule immediately after the first session begins. The House of Representatives is scheduled to convene on Thursday at 2 PM.

According to the agreed plan, the process will move quickly, with nominations for the Speaker’s post set to be filed on Falgun 20. The decision reflects a shared understanding among parties to ensure that the leadership of the House is established without delay, allowing parliamentary activities to proceed smoothly.

RSP Majority and Likely Candidate

The House of Representatives Speaker election is expected to be largely influenced by the current balance of power in Parliament. The Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) holds a dominant position with nearly a two-thirds majority, giving it a decisive role in the outcome.

Given this numerical strength, the candidate put forward by the party is almost certain to be elected. The party is preparing Deputy Chairperson DP Aryal as its likely nominee for the Speaker’s position, which would further strengthen its control over parliamentary proceedings.

With a clear timeline and strong majority backing, the House of Representatives Speaker election is expected to conclude smoothly, setting the stage for more active legislative work in the days ahead.
