The Government of Nepal has said it is closely observing the situation in Venezuela, following recent developments that have drawn widespread international attention.
The issue came into focus after Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro was detained by authorities from the United States and taken to the United States on Saturday, according to international reports.
The incident prompted reactions across Nepal’s political spectrum. Several political parties expressed strong objections, stating that the detention of a sitting head of state of a sovereign country runs counter to established international principles. In Kathmandu, protesters also took to the streets to demonstrate against the United States in response to the event.
Four days after the incident, the Nepal government issued an official statement calling on all parties concerned to show restraint and to avoid actions that could further escalate tensions.
In its statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reiterated Nepal’s firm support for the principles of sovereignty, territorial integrity, and political independence of states, as enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations. The ministry emphasized Nepal’s position that disputes should be resolved peacefully through dialogue, diplomacy, and mutual understanding.
The government also cautioned that steps which intensify international tensions could have serious consequences for global peace and stability, urging all sides to act responsibly and in accordance with international norms.
