Experts Stress China’s Role in Nepal’s Development

Experts in Kathmandu have highlighted China’s role as crucial for Nepal’s security and development, urging stronger research, leadership, and diplomacy as both nations mark 70 years of ties.

Kathmandu — Experts have underlined that China’s role is essential for Nepal’s security and development as the two countries mark 70 years of diplomatic relations. Speaking at a program organized by Friends on Cloud in Kathmandu, they said Nepal should draw on China’s advances in agriculture, education, technology, health, and research.

Former foreign minister and former ambassador to China Mahendra Pandey said Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal should handle the Lipulekh border issue with care. He urged the prime minister to use his upcoming visits to China and India to create space for constructive dialogue with both neighbors.

Pandey added that Chinese universities put research at the center of their academic work and suggested that Nepal’s institutions should do the same. Historian Dr. Surendra KC called China a pillar of security for Nepal.

Tracing links back to Aṃśuvarmā, Princess Bhrikuti, and artist Araniko, he said the relationship has deepened over centuries at both political and people-to-people levels. He argued that Nepal’s ties with China have historically been steadier than with India, noting that Nepal also supported China’s admission to the United Nations.

Friends on Cloud chairperson Shobhit Upreti said that while China is on track to become the world’s largest economic power, Nepal remains distracted by minor issues. He described the 70th anniversary of diplomatic ties as a proud moment and urged Nepal not to delay in making the most of China’s rise.

Foreign affairs expert Dr. Manita Kushi also stressed that Nepal should align its policies with China’s growing influence and act without delay to seize opportunities.

The speakers agreed that Nepal can only benefit from China’s rise through strong leadership, research-driven education, and practical diplomacy that safeguards national interests.
