Acting Chief Election Commissioner Ram Prasad Bhandari has warned that the misuse of technology and social media could disrupt the electoral process in Nepal’s upcoming House of Representatives election.
Bhandari made the remarks during a meeting at the Election Commission with a delegation from TikTok, which had visited the commission to express its commitment to preventing the misuse of digital platforms during the election period.
He stressed that vigilance from all stakeholders is essential to prevent the spread of misinformation, misleading content, and other abuses of technology that could negatively influence the election process. Bhandari also thanked TikTok for its cooperation and support related to the election.
He said TikTok’s decision to contribute free of charge to efforts aimed at ensuring a successful and credible election in Nepal was significant in itself.
The Election Commission is coordinating with social media platforms ahead of the election to curb misinformation, misleading materials, and activities that violate the election code of conduct. In this context, the commission has viewed the commitments and cooperation received from platforms such as TikTok positively.
