Maoist Centre Criticizes Government and Election Commission Over Poll Schedule

The Maoist Centre has voiced discontent with the government and Election Commission for releasing Nepal’s election timetable without consulting political parties.

Kathmandu — The CPN (Maoist Centre) has expressed dissatisfaction with the government and the Election Commission for announcing the upcoming House of Representatives election schedule without consulting political parties.

Party spokesperson Agni Sapkota said it was irresponsible to release the timetable without any dialogue or coordination among the political forces. “The Election Commission and the government should have engaged in discussions and coordination with political parties before announcing the schedule. Since that did not happen, our party has raised objections,” Sapkota said.

The Election Commission made the election schedule public on Monday. The Maoist Centre, however, said it had long been urging for wider dialogue and consensus before such major decisions.

According to Sapkota, both the government and the Commission have failed to show the level of initiative and preparation required by the situation. “We are committed to creating an environment conducive to elections. The country cannot afford further uncertainty — holding elections is essential,” he added.

Describing the current political situation as “exceptional,” Sapkota said President Ramchandra Paudel should take a more proactive role in fostering political understanding and stability. “In normal times, it would be understandable for the President to remain less directly involved, but the present context is extraordinary — therefore, his initiative is necessary,” he said.

Earlier, the Maoist Centre instructed its cadres nationwide to ensure their names are listed in the voter roll and to help others do the same. The party has also launched local-level campaigns as part of its preparations for the upcoming polls.
