Pokhara — Krishna Thapa, former mayor of Pokhara Metropolitan City and a leader of the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist–Leninist), died at the age of 65 after suffering a heart attack.
According to Bain Bahadur Adhikari Chhetri, chairman of CPN-UML Kaski, Thapa suddenly fell ill shortly after a review meeting related to the House of Representatives election in Kaski Constituency-1 had concluded. He reportedly suffered the heart attack while sitting on a chair after the meeting.
Sudden Health Emergency After Meeting
Chhetri said Thapa was immediately taken to Manipal Teaching Hospital in Pokhara for treatment after the heart attack occurred. However, doctors at the hospital later declared him dead.
“We had just finished the review meeting of Kaski-1 and were sitting together when he suffered a heart attack while seated on the chair,” Chhetri said. “We rushed him to the hospital, but doctors declared him dead.”
Long Political Career
Krishna Thapa was known as an active political figure in Nepal. He was elected mayor of Pokhara in the 1997 local elections.
He later continued his political career at the provincial level and was elected as a member of the Gandaki Provincial Assembly in 2017. In the 2022 local elections, he again contested for the post of mayor of Pokhara Metropolitan City.
Discontent Over Election Ticket
Thapa also served as the Kaski in-charge of CPN-UML and a central committee member of the party. In the recent House of Representatives election, he had initially been given the party ticket to contest from Kaski-2.
However, the ticket was later withdrawn and given to another central committee member, Rashmi Acharya, a decision that reportedly left him dissatisfied.
His death has created a wave of grief in Pokhara and within political circles in Gandaki Province.
