Kathmandu witnessed a sweeping overnight security operation that led to the arrest of 197 individuals, ranging from alleged high-profile figures to local gang members. The crackdown, initiated under Home Minister Sudan Gurung, marks one of the most aggressive law enforcement actions in recent years.
Business leader detained in financial crime probe
Among those detained is Shankar Lal Agrawal, chairman of the Shankar Group, which operates major industrial brands including Jagdamba Cement and Jagdamba Steel. Authorities confirmed he was taken into custody following hours of questioning at the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB).
Officials said the interrogation was linked to an ongoing money laundering investigation involving broker Deepak Bhatt, who was arrested earlier. Investigators believe Bhatt’s statements have led to expanding inquiries that now reach prominent business circles.
Airport agents, local gangs also targeted
The operation extended beyond financial investigations. Police teams deployed to Tribhuvan International Airport detained 18 individuals accused of coercing arriving passengers into using specific hotels in exchange for commissions.
Simultaneously, coordinated raids across Kathmandu resulted in the arrest of multiple individuals allegedly involved in organized street-level criminal activities. Authorities confirmed that both the Kathmandu Valley Crime Investigation Office and district police units were involved in these actions.

Officials reported that arrests continued throughout the night, with the total count nearing 197 by early morning. Police described the operation as part of an ongoing effort to dismantle networks involved in corruption, illegal brokerage, and organized crime.
