Senior Nepali Communist Party leader Jhalanath Khanal has expressed strong dissatisfaction over the party’s decision to expel leader Haribol Gajurel, raising serious concerns about internal democratic practices within the party.
In a statement shared on social media on Monday, Khanal criticized the decision, saying that Gajurel was expelled without being given an opportunity to present his explanation. He also pointed out that such a significant decision was taken without proper discussion inside the party, which he described as a worrying development.
According to Khanal, the move appeared to have been made at the discretion of a few individuals rather than through collective deliberation. He noted that even senior leaders from different party components were not formally informed about the decision and instead learned about it through public media, which he called an unusual and alarming practice.
Khanal warned that taking harsh disciplinary action against a senior leader without due process could deepen mistrust within the party and weaken its institutional foundations.
He has demanded that the action taken against Gajurel be immediately suspended. Khanal also called for an urgent meeting of leaders at the decision-making level, including Gajurel, stressing the need to strengthen the party through institutional and transparent processes.
Addressing party coordinator Pushpa Kamal Dahal (Prachanda), Khanal urged a serious internal discussion on why such steps were taken. He emphasized the need to review the entire episode and to establish a culture of collective decision-making and shared leadership rather than authoritarian practices within the party.
Khanal further warned that if timely reflection and open debate do not take place, it would become increasingly difficult to prevent the Nepal Communist Party from sliding into internal disarray at a time when the party is still in the process of consolidation.
