More than three million pages of confidential documents related to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein have been released by the U.S. Department of Justice, international media reported on Friday.
According to the Department of Justice, the disclosure includes approximately 180,000 photographs and nearly 2,000 videos. The BBC reported that this is the largest public release of Epstein-related records to date.
The release follows a law passed last year requiring the disclosure of such materials. However, the documents were made public six weeks later than the legally mandated deadline. U.S. Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche said all documents were identified, reviewed, and processed to ensure transparency before publication.
The files include information on Epstein’s time in prison, mental health evaluations, details surrounding his death in custody in 2019, and investigative materials related to his associate Ghislaine Maxwell. Maxwell has been convicted of assisting in the sexual exploitation of minors and is currently serving a prison sentence.
References to Influential Figures and Official Clarifications
The released documents contain email exchanges between Epstein and various influential figures from around the world. Among them are emails involving Prince Andrew, Duke of York, which indicate Epstein’s social connections with members of the British royal family.
The emails include references to a proposal for a confidential dinner at Buckingham Palace and an offer to arrange a meeting with a young Russian woman. The documents do not contain evidence of illegal activity in those exchanges.
The files also show that Epstein transferred £10,000 in 2009 to Reinaldo Avila da Silva, the husband of British politician Lord Peter Mandelson. The payment is described as a loan for educational training.
Mandelson has previously expressed regret over his association with Epstein and has stated that he was unaware of any criminal conduct. Former U.S. President Donald Trump’s name appears hundreds of times in the released files.
Trump has acknowledged having a past friendship with Epstein but has repeatedly said the relationship ended years before Epstein’s 2019 arrest. Trump has also stated that he had no knowledge of Epstein’s sexual crimes.
The Department of Justice said allegations involving Trump in the documents are unsubstantiated and unsupported by evidence, and described such claims as false. Some documents include claims involving Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates. Gates’ spokesperson said the allegations are completely false and baseless.
Although some emails appear to have been drafted by Epstein, there is no evidence they were sent to Gates. CNN reported that the files also reference U.S. President Joe Biden and Tesla and X owner Elon Musk. According to CNN, these mentions are contextual and based on unverified third-party claims.
The Justice Department said many names appearing in the files come from emails, tip-line submissions, or third-party allegations and do not establish criminal involvement. The department added that references in such documents should not be treated as factual conclusions.
Redactions, Ongoing Disputes, and Background of the Epstein Case
Questions remain over whether all Epstein-related documents have been released. Democratic lawmakers have accused the Justice Department of withholding millions of additional pages. Many of the released documents contain redactions. Under U.S. law, redactions are permitted to protect victims’ identities or ongoing investigations.
Despite this, some critics continue to express concern that powerful individuals may be shielded. The Justice Department said the files do not clearly identify men who abused women and that prosecutions would have been pursued if credible evidence existed.
Debate continues over whether the full truth of the Epstein case has been disclosed. Jeffrey Epstein and his British partner Ghislaine Maxwell were accused for decades of arranging underage girls for wealthy and powerful individuals.
They hosted guests at properties in New York and Palm Beach, Florida. Epstein also owned a private island in the Caribbean and used a private jet to transport visitors. Despite long-standing allegations, Epstein avoided serious investigation for years due to his connections with influential figures.
In 2006, he was arrested on charges of forcing underage girls into prostitution and sentenced to 18 months in prison. Under a controversial agreement, he was allowed to leave jail for up to 16 hours a day for work. He was released after serving 13 months. It is believed he continued his activities afterward.
Several women later came forward, stating they were exploited by Epstein as teenagers. One woman accused Prince Andrew, brother of King Charles, of sexual abuse. Prince Andrew was suspended from royal duties in 2019 and stripped of royal titles in 2022. He settled the case out of court. The woman later died by suicide.
Following renewed public allegations, Epstein was arrested again in 2019 during Donald Trump’s first term as president. Epstein died in prison later that year. Authorities ruled his death a suicide. Maxwell remains incarcerated.
Some have disputed the suicide finding, claiming Epstein was killed. Trump supporters promoted allegations that powerful Democrats were involved in child prostitution. These claims were linked to Epstein’s association with former President Bill Clinton. Flight records show Clinton traveled multiple times on Epstein’s private jet after leaving office in 2001.
During his political campaigns, Trump promised to release an alleged list of Epstein’s clients. His vice-presidential running mate J.D. Vance also called for such disclosure. Trump-appointed FBI Director Kash Patel and Deputy Director Dan Bongino said the FBI possessed Epstein-related files. Attorney General Pam Bondi later clarified that these files did not include a confirmed client list.
Despite public expectations, no new evidence emerged. Amid renewed scrutiny, the Trump administration released surveillance footage from the night before Epstein’s death. U.S. outlet Wired reported that the footage was edited and missing approximately three minutes.
The Wall Street Journal later reported that Trump wrote a letter to Epstein for his 50th birthday in 2003. The newspaper published the letter’s contents, describing sexually explicit imagery. Before Trump entered politics, public attention focused mainly on Epstein’s links to Clinton. After Trump became president, scrutiny shifted to Epstein’s relationship with Trump.
Photographs from the late 1990s and early 2000s show Epstein and Trump together at social events. In a 2002 New York magazine profile, Trump praised Epstein, saying he enjoyed the company of young women.
Flight logs cited by The New York Times indicate Trump flew on Epstein’s private jet multiple times. Trump has acknowledged the flights but denies visiting Epstein’s private island or engaging in illegal conduct. According to The Washington Post, their relationship deteriorated after a dispute over a Palm Beach property purchase.
When Epstein was arrested in 2019, Trump said he had not spoken to him for nearly 15 years. Whether Trump engaged in criminal activity related to Epstein has not been established. Allegations remain unproven.
