Iran claims it has shot down multiple US fighter jets, marking a sharp escalation in the ongoing conflict and raising fresh uncertainty over control of the region’s airspace.
F-15 and A-10 incidents raise immediate concerns
Iranian officials said a two-seat F-15E Strike Eagle was brought down inside Iranian territory on Friday. One crew member was reportedly rescued, while the second remains missing. Efforts to locate the missing pilot faced setbacks after search helicopters came under attack and were forced to withdraw, although they returned safely.
On the same day, Iran also claimed it downed an A-10 Warthog aircraft in Kuwait. According to initial accounts, the pilot ejected safely using a parachute. However, US officials have not confirmed whether the aircraft was brought down by hostile fire, leaving the exact cause unclear.
Claims over advanced F-35 jets remain unverified
Iran has also asserted that its air defense systems targeted advanced F-35 fighter jets in recent weeks, including a second incident over central Iran. These stealth aircraft are designed to avoid radar detection and are considered among the most advanced in the world.
While Iran claimed the chances of survival for the pilot were low, there has been no official confirmation from US authorities. Earlier reports suggested one such aircraft made an emergency landing during operations, with the pilot in stable condition. Independent verification of Iran’s latest claims remains unavailable.
Rising casualties and regional impact
The Iran claims downing of US fighter jets come amid a broader escalation in the conflict, which has intensified since late February. Thousands of people have reportedly been killed across the region, with significant casualties in Iran as well as in nearby areas including Israel and the West Bank.
US forces have also suffered losses, with several troops reported killed and hundreds injured. The fighting has displaced large populations, particularly in Lebanon, where more than a million people have been forced to leave their homes.
The Iran claims downing of US fighter jets highlight growing risks of a wider regional confrontation, as both sides continue military operations with no clear sign of de-escalation.
