Kathmandu — The Department of Transport Management has suspended all services after its systems were destroyed during the Gen-Z demonstrations on August 23 and 24. The department’s core infrastructure — including digital vehicle registration and electronic driving license systems — has been rendered completely inoperative.
In a circular issued on Friday, the department stated that both physical structures and electronic systems had been severely damaged in the violent protests. As a result, all services provided by the department have been suspended until further notice.
“The department is working at full speed to restore the systems and resume public services,” read the notice signed by Director General Rajiv Pokharel. “However, service seekers are currently facing difficulties due to the system breakdown.”
According to the Constitution and the Work Division Report of 2018, responsibilities related to driver’s license issuance and vehicle registration fall under provincial governments. Citing this provision, the department has requested the concerned ministries of all provinces to coordinate and facilitate essential services.
The notice further stated that until the central system is restored, offices are instructed to provide necessary services as far as possible based on available records or valid documents of the concerned individuals.
In addition, the department has urged provincial governments to take policy-level decisions within their legal jurisdiction regarding driver’s license renewals, extensions, and other related services to ensure smooth operations.
Emphasizing coordination between the federal and provincial levels, the department has called for collective efforts to prevent citizens from being deprived of essential transportation services.
