Planned as a lasting tribute to 42 martyrs of the Gen-Z movement, the memorial at Satdobato remains unfinished with no clear timeline for resuming work.

A project launched to honor those who lost their lives during the Gen-Z movement has come to a halt, leaving the future of the planned memorial in uncertainty. Construction of the Gen-Z Martyrs Memorial inside the International Sports Complex at Satdobato, Lalitpur, began with the promise of creating a permanent site of remembrance. Today, the construction area sits largely inactive.

The memorial was conceived as a tribute to 42 of the 45 people who were declared martyrs following the protests of Bhadra 23 and 24. Beyond commemorating those who died, the project was expected to serve as a public record of the movement and pass its history on to future generations.

The slowdown has drawn attention because the memorial was presented not merely as an infrastructure project, but as a symbol of collective memory. For families of the martyrs and those connected to the movement, the unfinished site has become a reminder of promises that remain unfulfilled.

What the Project Was Expected to Include

  • Statues of 42 martyrs
  • A dedicated memorial space
  • Structures reflecting the history of the movement
  • A park and memorial zone designed in a Nepali architectural style

The project moved forward after the 124th board meeting of the National Sports Council approved the allocation of land for the memorial. The decision was taken during a meeting chaired by then Minister for Youth and Sports Bablu Gupta, giving the project formal institutional backing.

No Clear Explanation for the Delay

Although construction had started, work has since stopped. No detailed public explanation has been provided regarding why the project stalled or when it will resume.

The lack of clarity has increased concern among martyrs’ families, people associated with the movement, and other stakeholders who viewed the memorial as an important public commitment rather than a routine development project.

As months pass without visible progress, uncertainty continues to surround the site. Until the responsible authorities provide a clear position on funding, construction, and completion timelines, the future of the Gen-Z Martyrs Memorial remains unresolved.
