Gagan Thapa Says Nepali Congress Must Hold Special Convention by Mid-January

Nepali Congress General Secretary Gagan Thapa has said that convening a special party convention by mid-January has become unavoidable to strengthen party unity, rebuild confidence, and fulfill national responsibility.

Nepali Congress General Secretary Gagan Thapa has said that convening a special party convention by mid-January has become unavoidable in order to strengthen party unity, rebuild confidence, and fulfill the party’s national responsibility.

In a message shared on social media on the occasion of the 49th National Unity and Reconciliation Day, Thapa recalled the historic moment 49 years ago when leaders including B.P. Koirala and Ganesh Man Singh returned to Nepal under extremely difficult circumstances after issuing a call for national unity and reconciliation.

Thapa said he hopes that the people’s aspiration for change can be clearly expressed through fair and healthy electoral competition. “On this historic occasion of National Unity and Reconciliation Day, I wish that the people’s desire for change finds expression through clean and competitive elections,” he said.

According to Thapa, the journey of change requires inspiration rooted not in opposition and exclusion, but in a shared sense of collective responsibility for nation-building. He emphasized that political progress is possible only when individuals and groups move forward with mutual respect and a common national purpose.

Thapa noted that the Nepali Congress is currently searching for the confidence necessary to fulfill its national role. He stressed that such confidence can only emerge from internal unity within the party.

“This confidence comes from unity,” he said. “And unity does not come from exclusion, nor from ignoring differing opinions. It is achieved only by using a shared platform where diverse views can be openly expressed.”

According to Thapa, in the present context, that shared platform is the Nepali Congress’s special convention. He further stated that holding a special convention by mid-January is not only a constitutional obligation under the party statute but has also become essential for restoring unity and confidence within the party.

Highlighting the responsibility of building a Nepali Congress capable of fulfilling its duty to the nation, Thapa said this responsibility represents a defining task for every Congress worker in the present era. He added that the decision to move forward with a special convention stems directly from this responsibility.

“We have chosen the path of convening a special convention by mid-January precisely to fulfill this responsibility,” he said.

Thapa also called on the entire party rank and file to stand firmly together, extend mutual cooperation, and strengthen unity within the organization. Concluding his message, Thapa extended his best wishes to all on the occasion of the 49th National Unity and Reconciliation Day.
