Kathmandu — On September 9 (Bhadra 24), the residence of former President Bidya Devi Bhandari was not spared as violent protests targeted the homes of almost all top leaders.
Protesters attacked and set fire to her house in Bhangaal, Budhanilkantha, while Bhandari was still inside. As the fire spread, the Nepal Army rescued her and rushed her away in a vehicle. The dramatic scene was later circulated on social media by demonstrators. After her evacuation, protesters entered the premises and carried out vandalism and arson.
Evacuation to Shivapuri and Wider Political Unrest
According to her secretariat, the attack on the residence began Tuesday afternoon. Following the rescue, the army moved her by road to Shivapuri, where she was sheltered at the Nepal Army Staff College, an officer confirmed.
At the time, outgoing Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and several ministers were also kept at the same location. Most leaders have since left the secure site, with only Oli remaining there. The army claims Bhandari has been moving between Shivapuri and her residence, which is no longer habitable. Her secretariat has also confirmed that she is safe.
Earlier that day, the residence of Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba had already come under attack. Security forces faced difficulties evacuating Deuba and his wife, who were reportedly beaten by protesters and sustained injuries.
