Kathmandu — The Deuba faction meeting held in Kathmandu on Tuesday has brought renewed attention to deepening divisions within the Nepali Congress, as leaders reviewed election results and internal party challenges.
The discussion took place in Dhumbarahi under the leadership of senior leader Purna Bahadur Khadka. According to leaders present, the Deuba faction meeting focused on assessing recent electoral performance while addressing growing concerns over organizational unity and leadership direction within the party.
Several influential leaders including Bimalendra Nidhi, Shashank Koirala, Prakash Man Singh, Minendra Rijal, Dila Upadhyay, Bal Bahadur KC, NP Saud, Shyam Kumar Ghimire, and Mohan Bahadur Basnet attended the meeting.
Central committee members elected from the party’s 14th general convention were also present, reinforcing the faction’s position as the legitimate continuation of the earlier leadership structure.
During the Deuba faction meeting, leaders emphasized that their gathering represents the working committee formed through the 14th general convention. However, the party remains sharply divided after a separate special general convention held in Poush introduced a new leadership team under Gagan Thapa. The Deuba side had boycotted that process, questioning its legitimacy.
The dispute has now moved into the legal arena, with the Deuba faction challenging the recognition of the special convention in court. As a result, two parallel committees have been operating within the Nepali Congress, each carrying out its own political and organizational activities, further intensifying internal tensions.
Notably, party president Sher Bahadur Deuba was not present at the meeting, as he is currently abroad for medical treatment. Despite his absence, leaders from his camp continue regular consultations aimed at consolidating their influence and strategy within the party.
The outcome of the Deuba faction meeting is expected to play a crucial role in shaping the Nepali Congress’s unity, as ongoing legal and political developments determine the party’s future direction.
