Nepali Congress Leader Bishwo Prakash Sharma Signals Flexibility on Election Date

Nepali Congress General Secretary Bishwa Prakash Sharma has said elections could be held in April if circumstances require, emphasizing political consensus, Gen Z inclusion, and credible implementation of the government agreement.

Nepali Congress General Secretary Bishwo Prakash Sharma has said that holding elections in April should be accepted as a natural option if circumstances require, even as political parties remain committed to the scheduled date of Falgun 21.

In a Facebook post on Friday morning, Sharma said flexibility may be necessary to ensure the inclusion of the Gen Z movement, create a credible and trustworthy electoral environment, and make voting more accessible in Himalayan and remote regions.

“We are all committed to that date. But the core issue is solution and the Constitution,” Sharma wrote. “Making the upcoming journey smooth through consensus and cooperation is our shared responsibility.”

Sharma welcomed the 10-point agreement signed on Wednesday between the government and representatives of the Gen Z movement. However, he emphasized that the agreement would have been more reliable if political parties had been formally included in the process.

According to him, involving political parties from the beginning would have strengthened the agreement’s credibility and ensured its sustainability in the days ahead.

“Reaching consensus to institutionalize achievements gained through various movements is important,” Sharma wrote. “The commitment to good governance established by the Gen Z movement must now become a shared responsibility and collective duty.”

He stressed that political parties remain the main and inseparable drivers of democracy, and said the government should have ensured party ownership while signing the agreement. Such inclusion, he noted, would have made the process more dependable for the future.

Sharma also called for seriousness in the initial phase of implementing the agreement. He said the state must act without hesitation on accountability related to the use of force on Bhadra 23, along with a thorough investigation and action over the destruction that occurred on Bhadra 24.

While the government is taking essential time to implement the agreement with the Gen Z movement, Sharma said the election date of Falgun 21 should not become an obstacle in that process.
