Nepali Congress Submits 20 Proportional Representation Lawmakers List to Nepal Election Commission

The Nepali Congress has submitted the names of 20 lawmakers under the proportional representation system to the Election Commission of Nepal, including 15 women and five men to meet constitutional representation requirements.

Kathmandu — The Nepali Congress has finalized the names of 20 lawmakers to be appointed to the House of Representatives under the proportional representation system and submitted the list to the Election Commission of Nepal.

The decision was made during a meeting of the party’s Central Executive Committee held Sunday at its central office in Sanepa. The meeting was chaired by party president Gagan Thapa, where the list of lawmakers to be recommended under the proportional representation category was approved.

15 Women and 5 Men Included in PR List

Party spokesperson Devaraj Chalise said the list includes 15 women and five men among the 20 lawmakers selected under the proportional representation system. The composition was determined to ensure the constitutionally required level of women’s representation in the federal parliament.

“Since a minimum level of women’s representation must be ensured in the federal parliament, we have recommended 15 women among the 20 names sent under the proportional representation category,” Chalise said.

In the House of Representatives election held on march 5, the Nepali Congress secured 18 seats under the first-past-the-post system and 20 seats under the proportional representation system. Based on those results, the party has recommended lawmakers to fill the proportional representation seats in parliament.

Election Commission to Publish Final Names

According to the party, the 20 names were selected from the proportional representation candidate list previously submitted to the Election Commission when Sher Bahadur Deuba was serving as party president.

Chalise said the detailed list of the individuals recommended under the proportional representation system will be made public by the Election Commission after completing its verification process.

He added that the Nepali Congress will have representation in 62 seats in the Federal Parliament, including both the House of Representatives and the National Assembly.

The party is also preparing to convene a Central Committee meeting later this week to review the results of the recent House of Representatives election. Party leaders are expected to discuss the election outcome and future plans during the meeting.
