YouTuber ‘Driver Resham’ Jailed After Failing to Post Bail

Reshamraj Paudel, a popular Nepali YouTuber known as ‘Driver Resham’, has been jailed after failing to pay a court-ordered Rs 50,000 bail in Kathmandu.

Kathmandu — Reshamraj Paudel, a YouTuber popularly known as ‘Driver Resham’ on social media, has been sent to jail after failing to post the bail amount set by the Kathmandu District Court.

On Friday, Judge Shyam Bihari Maurya of the Kathmandu District Court ordered Paudel’s release on bail amounting to Rs 50,000. However, as he was unable to pay the amount, he was remanded in custody according to the court’s directive.

According to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Deepak Raj Awasthi, spokesperson for the Cyber Bureau, “Since the bail amount was not paid, he has been sent to custody in accordance with the court’s order.” Paudel is currently being held at the Central Jail in Jagannathdewal, Kathmandu.

He is under investigation for allegedly publishing offensive and defamatory content targeting public figures on social media platforms.

A cybercrime case has been filed against Paudel under the Electronic Transactions Act. He was arrested on Asar 2 (mid-June) from Nepalgunj and brought to Kathmandu.

According to police investigations, Paudel posted YouTube videos using offensive language against former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba, CPN (Maoist Centre) Chair Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’, and Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak.

Following complaints about his online activities, the Cyber Bureau initiated an investigation. With support from the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB), Paudel was apprehended and transported to Kathmandu.

On Thursday, the Office of the Government Attorney filed a case against him at the Kathmandu District Court.
